For those that don't know, Mugwump at Sharkeys is the bars Live music Indie night, showcasing up to 3 live acts each week from Hull and often further afield.
This Tuesday 14th October I wandered into the bar only to find that I'd missed the first act on, sorry guys.
The first act I mangaged to lend an ear too were Euphoria Audio, a 4 piece band that I'm lead to believe are from Wakefield and apparently a few of 'em used to trek around our neck of the woods at Hull University.
Weather this was their first appearance in Hull or not I'm not too sure but they sounded tight and very well rehearsed with catchy energetic songs with some finely crafted guitar solos. You could dissagree but I feel they had a slight Incubus twinge to them too, more 'Sing the Sorrow' style than 'Morning View' but there was definately something there.

The headliners if the night were Vibrant Rain, a four piece band from Hull who barely looked old enough to be in the venue, 17 max. Never the less, the front of the venue cleared as everyone crowded round the back of Sharkeys to view the headline act.
From the moment they started their set, it was clear that Vibrant Rain were far from wet, and for a fairly new band on the scene they gave a pretty good performance of Indie Rock tunes from their first intro with the 2nd guitarist giving most of the energy and some great 2nd vocals which made parts much stronger.

Vibrant Rain really did Mugwump justice this week and played a set of foot stomping rock tunes with catchy lyrics that stuck in my head even after leaving, always a good point especially as I've got the memory of a fish. They make strong contendors as a quality pub rock band and I'd reccomend them to any venue looking to put on quality live music in the area.
A few tunes in, they came out with their own take on Subways, 'Rock n Roll Queen', one of my personal favourite tunes. I usually hate it when bands attempt to cover a decent tune, just because they run the risk of talking it to the sea side in hope of running in the sand hand in hand and most of the time end up dragging it under muddy water and leading it into a watery grave. Luckily Vibrant Rain had a jolly holiday with this one and really make it their own, much faster, louder and putting their own rocky spin on the number. Jobs a good 'un.

It's clear that Vibrant Rain have got a good thing going but they didn't seem to believe it themselves, as noted previous, the 2nd guitarist was the only band member that really seemed to move much so the only thing this band are lacking are a bit of stage presence, which surely will come with a few more gigs in the area. You’ve got a good sound lads, now go wild! It seems now that they’ve got their foot in the door of something good and I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of them around Hull in the future. These guys are only young so they've got plenty of time to improve and once they nail that one on the head by jove they've got it!
They slowed down their set with a great acoustic sounding track, that was until the drums came in for the chorus giving it some real bouncing energy and with brilliant vocals, these guys have a real set ‘o lungs on them, definitely don’t smoke 20 a day like me.
The last song of the night kicked in and 30 seconds through the place seemed to clear, pure ignorance in my opinion, you’d have thought the crowd could at least have waited another minute and 30 seconds till their set was over but hey, it’s a free world and these freeloaders had had their slice of free live music pie.
Vibrant Rain did a good job at Mugwump this week and I’m sure we’ve not seen the best out of ‘em yet and I’ll look forward to hearing where they’re going next.
