North Yorkshire-based indie band, One Night Only, have enjoyed
something of a dream year in the limelight in 2008.
Fresh from their successful summer festival appearances, the most acclaimed at Glastonbury in June, they also scored a top ten hit with Just for Tonight and, if the reaction of the mainly student crowd at Asylum, at the University of Hull, in Cottingham Road, was anything to go by, they will soon be enjoying a few more of them.
One Night Only are bouncy, five-piece indie band made up of George Craig on lead vocals and guitar alongside the drums, bass and guitars of Mark Hayton, Daniel Parkin and Sam Ford and added input of Jack Sails on keyboards.
They appeared at the university nightclub on Friday, October 17, and shot through almost all of their best known tracks.
You and Me and It’s About Time were perhaps the top numbers for most of the crowd who, by the time the set was half way through, were surging forward at every opportunity.
Craig’s vocals were as good as ever – he does have one of the most distinctive voices in music at the moment – and they were also holding up well to a bout of bronchitis he had earlier admitted to suffered with.
At times the group did stray a little away from what they do best (their infectious, pop-based indie) and the keyboards were getting increasingly in the way of the guitars, making them sound mushy and lost, but overall the band covered themselves well.
They will no doubt be better in a year’s time when a second album is completed and released (there is no date for album number two as yet). However, as they closed with Just For Tonight, I don’t think many people were complaining.
In fact, by the way the audience bayed for a second encore, I doubt one night only was enough.
